Point solutions in procurement vs. S2P suites: what’s the right approach?

11. juni 2026 | Blog | Purchase to Pay

Do we invest in point solutions for procurement, or choose an integrated Source-to-Pay (S2P) suite?

The answer isn’t always straightforward. Both approaches have advantages and limitations, depending on where your organization stands today. In this article, we take a closer look at point solutions in procurement, how they compare to S2P suites, and why the distinction is becoming less black-and-white.

1. What are point solutions in procurement?

Point solutions are specialized tools designed to solve a single procurement challenge. Typical examples include eSourcing tools for tendering and negotiations, contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, supplier onboarding or risk platforms, and invoice automation tools. These solutions are often best-in-class in their niche. Organizations typically adopt them to address a specific pain point quickly, without overhauling the entire procurement landscape.

Why organizations choose point solutions

There are a few common drivers behind this approach: First, speed of implementation. Point solutions are often quicker to deploy. If your immediate issue is invoice processing inefficiencies, a full S2P transformation may not be necessary.
Second, depth of functionality. Specialized tools tend to go deeper in one area. A dedicated sourcing platform, for example, may offer more advanced negotiation features than a broader suite. Third, lower initial investment. Compared to a full S2P suite, point solutions can feel like a more manageable first step, both financially and operationally.

2. The challenges of a point solution strategy

While point solutions can deliver fast wins, they often introduce long-term complexity. Procurement is inherently connected, from sourcing to contracting to invoicing. When each step sits in a different tool, processes become fragmented. This fragmentation typically leads to data silos, where each system generates its own dataset. Without strong integration, organizations struggle with limited spend visibility, inconsistent reporting, and manual reconciliation efforts. Integration itself becomes an ongoing effort. As more tools are added, maintaining APIs, data flows, and system consistency requires continuous attention. At the same time, the user experience suffers. Multiple systems mean multiple interfaces and workflows, which can reduce adoption and efficiency across the organization.

3. What is an S2P suite?

An S2P (Source-to-Pay) suite is an integrated platform that connects the full procurement lifecycle, including: Sourcing, Supplier management, Contract management, Procurement (P2P), Invoicing and payment. The goal is to provide one environment where data, workflows, users and suppliers are connected.

The benefits of an s2p suite

1. End-to-end visibility: With all processes connected, organizations gain a single source of truth for spend, suppliers, and performance.
2. Process consistency: Standardized workflows ensure compliance and efficiency across the entire procurement function.
3. Improved data quality: Because data flows through one platform, it becomes more reliable, complete, and actionable.
4. Better collaboration: Finance, procurement, and suppliers work within the same ecosystem, reducing friction and improving alignment.

4. Where suites traditionally have fallen short

Historically, S2P suites have been perceived as less flexible, slower to implement and not as deep in specific functionalities as point solutions. This is one of the reasons why many organizations initially opted for a best-of-breed stack of point solutions.

The Reality Today: The Lines Are Blurring

The traditional “point solutions vs. suite” debate is becoming less relevant.
Modern S2P platforms like Onventis are evolving toward modular architectures, combining the strengths of both approaches. This changes the conversation.

A More Practical Perspective

The traditional “point solutions vs. suite” debate is becoming less relevant.

In reality, many procurement transformations don’t start with a full suite rollout.
They start with a single, high-impact process, such as sourcing optimization, invoice automation or supplier onboarding.

From there, the need often grows organically:
• better integration
• improved visibility
• more control over adjacent processes
This is where the limitations of standalone point solutions start to surface.

5. An industry trend: building “suites” through acquisitions

In response to the demand for end-to-end solutions, many software providers have attempted to evolve into full S2P suites, often by acquiring multiple point solution vendors.

On paper, this creates a broad portfolio covering sourcing, contracts, procurement, and invoicing. In practice, however, this approach often introduces new challenges.

While marketed as a unified suite, these solutions are frequently still loosely connected products behind the scenes. This can result in inconsistent user experiences, where different interfaces and process logic remain visible to users. Data fragmentation may also persist, as information still needs to be synchronized between systems rather than flowing seamlessly.

In addition, aligning multiple acquired technologies into a truly integrated platform takes time and is not always fully realized. As a result, organizations may find themselves working with a “suite in name, but point solutions in practice.”

6. Which approach is better?

It depends on your starting point, priorities, and long-term vision. If you need quick wins and have a very specific challenge, point solutions in procurement can be a logical first step. If your goal is long-term efficiency, control, and scalability, an integrated S2P approach becomes increasingly valuable.

The nuance: it’s no longer a binary choice.

The key takeaway is that it is becoming harder to make a direct comparison between point solutions and S2P suites.

Modern platforms, such as modular S2P solutions, allow organizations to:
• Start small, with one process or module
• Expand over time as needs evolve
• Ultimately connect all procurement processes in one environment

This means you don’t have to choose upfront between flexibility and integration. You can adopt a phased approach without locking yourself into a fragmented landscape.

Point solutions in procurement will continue to play a role, especially when addressing immediate challenges. But as procurement becomes more data-driven, strategic, and interconnected, the value of bringing processes together becomes increasingly clear.
